Stillwater Viaduct Arch Rib and Arch Column Flexural Strengthening

In 2012, the Stillwater Viaduct was closed for necessary structural repairs and rehabilitation. The 80-year old historical structure was to have a total structural replacement as well as strengthening of the individual arch column and pier sections. For the latter portion of the project, Fyfe Company aided in developing a structural solution utilizing its Tyfo® fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) system.

The Tyfo® SCH-41 composite system was chosen to provide additional flexural capacity to both the arch columns and arch ribs of the viaduct. Because of the unique geometry of the arch columns, the edge corners were filled with a grout prior to FRP application to create a smooth transition for the fiber.

With the DOT incentive to finish the project early – a $10,000 per day payment for an early finish – it was advantageous to use the quick curing and easy to install Tyfo® Fibrwrap® Systems. In the end, the rehabilitation was completed by Fibrwrap Consturction five weeks ahead of schedule.
